Self Help and More was created in 1999 by two experts in the field of electrical wiring, Warren Goodrich, and Donald Kerr. Together they had over 60 years of experience with electrical wiring.

This site grew out of a desire to share what they had learned in their collective careers. You'll find articles on wiring, building, plumbing and many other home improvement related topics. The Self Help and More forums are also a rich source of home improvement related information containing more than 12,000 different threads and countless posts.

The site was sold to QuinStreet in 2008.  Below you can find information on the previous owners.

Warren Goodrich was born in 1950 in Shelbyville, Indiana. He grew up in a family of five children and worked the family farm until he graduated from high school at age 17. He then accepted a position with Sears Roebuck as a service technician. At age 19 he completed a full training program in appliance repair, heating and cooling design and lawn and garden equipment repair at LaGrange, Illinois.

He then started his own business, Goodrich Appliance and Electric, an electrical construction and appliance repair company. By the time he was 20 he had two full time employees. He is still active in that business after 31 years. However that business evolved as he received formal schooling over the following 30 years and grew to as many as 15 employees at one time. That business started with work on lawn mowers and appliances then evolved into residential construction style electrical contracting, then evolved into small industrial electrical contracting, then evolved into larger industrial electrical contracting, then, finally, evolved into writing books and articles such as the ones you can find in this site.

During that time he also provided instructions and schooling opportunities for his employees. He also obtained formal schooling in the field of electricity and code studies. He has passed an unlimited number of local jurisdictional electrical contracting tests including tests concerning electrical, and code, and enforcement, such as:

BOARD OF GOVERNORS of NATIONAL CERTIFICATION PROGRAM FOR CONSTRUCTION

CODE INSPECTORS of NEW YORK FOR ELECTRICAL ONE AND TWO FAMILY ELECTRICAL GENERAL

ELECTRICAL PLAN REVIEW INDIANA DEPT OF FIRE AND BUILDING SERVICES IN ELECTRICAL ONE AND TWO FAMILY ELECTRICAL GENERAL

ELECTRICAL PLAN REVIEW -- BUILDING LEGAL -- BUILDING ADMINISTRATION.

He's also passed the following subjects; 1983 through 1990 Tom Henry Code prep classes, International Building Officials concerning the following subjects; BUILDING LEGAL, BUILDING ADMINISTRATION. He has maintained annual credits for eight years in Continuing Education Units with the International Association of Electrical Inspectors Assoc. He's an accredited teacher at several education establishments including Ivy Tech of Columbus, Indiana, and Ivy Tech of Indianapolis.

He's also a national certified building and electrical inspector. Past experience includes several years as an electrical inspector in the state of Indiana, as well as recent experience as a building and plumbing inspector. He has written too many self help pass outs to mention and has authored two technical books relating to the electrical industry.

On a personal note, Warren is divorced and has one daughter that he's very proud of. His daughter's name is Dara Goodrich and she has just received her degree as a paralegal! Now he feels he has really accomplished something worthwhile.

Donald Kerr was born in 1955 in the province of Nova Scotia which is on the east coast of Canada. He graduated from high school and took a two diploma course in Radio & Television Arts at Confederation college in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.

After graduating from college, he was employed by CKPR / CFRD television in Thunder Bay for 3 1/2 years in their videotape and master control operations. In 1977 he obtained employment in Ottawa, Ontario (Canada) and has been employed at a broadcasting station there since then. Up until 1998 he was working in the videotape and master control center. Most of the computer software during the later portion of that time was written by him.

Since 1998 he has been involved with news editing and live newscast playout co-ordination. He's written two manuals on the video server and automation system that was introduced and installed in 2000 and those manuals have now been forwarded and in use at several locations in Canada as well as several places in the United States. He holds an amateur radio certificate.

Donald's father was a WWII veteran and had worked for the Nova Scotia power company in his earlier years following the war, in his later years he ran a poultry warehouse.

Donald is mostly self-taught, and understands most all electrical wiring procedures in the context of a residential setting. There are very few things that he can't wire. He has done most of his own automobile repairs including replacing a rack and pinion steering which as a DIY'er saved him a lot of money.

Donald is married and has 3 children.
