Do-it-yourselfers typically shy away from hiring others to do projects on their homes, and for the most part this is a good thing. But not always.
Garage Door Opener Installation
When it comes to installing an automatic garage door opener, for example,
the reasons for not doing it yourself may be more compelling than saving the
$100, give or take, you would pay for professional installation. For example:
- You have to read and follow the instructions. Who wants to do that?
- If you do a good job, no one will notice.
- If you mess it up, the story of how
the garage door came crashing down on your car, shattering the windshield,
will be retold at every family gathering for the rest of your life.
Compare it to some other do-it-yourself projects:
- "Hey, nice new deck!"
- "Thanks, I built it myself!"
- "Really? I'm impressed!"
- "Hey, I love the new fence!"
- "Thanks, I built it myself!"
- "Wow! You must be very good with your hands!"
- "Hey, you got an automatic garage door opener."
- "Yeah, I installed it myself. Only took half a day."
- "Really? You, uh, know you can hire someone to do that for like 100 bucks?"
Do you really want to spend half a day learning a skill that you will rarely, if ever, use again? Because let's face it, at most you'll install two or three garage door openers in a lifetime. The fact is that no one other than the professionals will ever install enough garage door openers to actually get good at it. So why not leave it to them?
