Vinyl Siding Repair

By Karen Lawson

Vinyl siding is the covering of choice for many homeowners. While the price point and up-keep are good selling points, the durability isn't always as good. In cold weather the vinyl has the tendency to get brittle. If you find that you have some pieces that have cracked, either because of age or debris hitting it, you have a couple of options. You could always call a contractor to take a look and get an estimate. The other choice would be to roll up your sleeves and fix it yourself.

Do-It-Yourself Vinyl Siding Repair Tips

In some cases, whoever did the original siding will have left you with extra pieces in case there was a need. If there is no left over pieces, you could try to get a hold of the contractor and see if he can tell you the manufacture of the siding. If none of this is available you are going to have to try to match it as closely as possible. The best option, at this point, would be to take off the broken piece and take it to a building supply store. They will be able to help match the color, texture, thickness and sheen as closely as possible.

The Tools of the Trade

There are only a few tools you will need to for vinyl siding repair. The first will be a siding remover tool; you should be able to find this for about $4 at your local hardware store. Also, you will need a sharp pair of metal sheers to trim down the piece of siding to fit. Lastly, you will need a hammer to both remove the old nails and then fresh nails to attach the new piece of siding.
