DIY Roofing

Is DIY Roofing Right For Me?

Maybe. It is up to you, the homeowner, to make that decision. However, before deciding to embark on a DIY roofing project, there are several points to think about. The roof, besides the actual framing of your home, is the most important part of the house. It keeps weather elements from destroying your home, it keeps your family safe, and besides, a house would look funny without a roof. This particular DIY project is more difficult than others, because mistakes could not only damage your home, but they could damage your body as well. Roofs are up high, so safety rules should be followed to a "T".

Consider your DIY roofing experience

Some homeowners are more experienced in DIY projects in general, so DIY roofing may be something they feel they can accomplish. And with careful research and measuring, they probably can. However, if you have little or no experience in home improvement, you would be better off hiring someone to help you. A "handyman" may be more likely to let you help with the installation, a contractor will not, mostly for insurance reasons.

Another very important consideration that many people forget to think about is the actual equipment involved. A nail gun, a chalk line, a hammer and crowbar are some of the simple tools you will need, but if you don't have this equipment, you will either need to rent or buy them, which adds to the final cost.

Realistically evaluate your time; DIY roofing takes a lot of time

Because the purpose of the roof is to protect your home, it is important not to leave it without one for very long. DIY roofing will take longer than a contractor with a hired crew. If you are laying shingles over existing shingles (as long as there are less than three layers), time isn't as big of a consideration as if you are doing a complete tear out. If you don't have at least two to three days in a row that you can devote to this project, you are probably better off hiring someone.
