House Cleaning Tips for Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floors are beautiful, sturdy and long-lasting. Well taken care of hardwood floors can last hundreds of years. There are a few things you absolutely have to do in order to maintain their appearance, such as wiping up spills immediately and avoiding scratches, but overall, hardwood floors are fairly easy to maintain if you follow these simple cleaning tips.

Cleaning tips for hardwood floors; choosing your cleaning method

There are many ways to keep a hardwood floor clean, so how do you know which is the best for your floor? When in doubt, soap and water is always a good choice. Just make sure you rinse with clean water then dry to avoid standing water, which will warp and stain floors. Another cleaning product is Murphy's Oil Soap, which when diluted with water is a great all purpose cleaner and when used at full strength will help restore the shine. One other method that we have recently discovered at our home is a steam mop. This mop cleans with steam and nothing else and dries the floor as it passes over it. The only problem with this is that it does leave a little bit of water standing, just be sure to wipe it up. The best cleaning tip for choosing your method is to try different types until you find the one that works best for your floor.

Cleaning tips for hardwood floors; how to prevent staining and warping

One of the best and most important cleaning tips for keeping your floors looking at their best is to wipe up any spills immediately. Any water allowed to stand on hardwood floors, no matter how good they are sealed, can warp the boards and leave you in a mess. One other tip that is specific for winter is to be sure to wipe up any ice-melt, not only does it melt ice, but it will eat the finish right off of your floor. If you do this, and mop them at least once a month, your floors could outlast you!
