DIY Cabinet Refacing: How to Sandblast a Cabinet

In a DIY cabinet refacing project, sanding the cabinet can be a time consuming, labor-intensive task. Rather than sanding the cabinet by hand, some homeowners prefer to save time by sandblasting the cabinet using a sandblaster. If you do not own a sandblaster, you can borrow or rent one, rather than spending the money to purchase a new one at the hardware store. Note: remember to select a well-ventilated room for your work space for safety purposes. You don't want to breathe in all the dust and fragments created by the sandblasting process.

Tools Needed to Get Started

Before you begin sandblasting during your DIY cabinet refacing project, you'll need to gather several materials. You'll need: an air compressor, a blasting gun and blasting bucket, a large blanket or tarp, blasting media, tape, a face shield (with hood), sandpaper, and wood filler.

DIY Cabinet Refacing: Step by Step Sandblasting Instructions

First, take the large cloth or tarp and use it to cover any exposed furniture or flooring you wish to protect (tape the cloth in place). The cloth will also collect any blasting media. Then, get dressed in your protective gear, ensuring that all of your skin is completely covered.

Once you and the area are readied, you need to prepare your equipment. Pack your bucket with blast media, and adjust the compressor to 100 pounds per square inch. When you're ready, set up the cabinet surface. Space the blaster at least five inches from the surface, then move back and forth in smooth motions across the cabinet door as you blast. Be careful not to allow the blaster to remain in one spot for too long, or you will create an uneven surface on the door.

Once you're finished blasting, inspect the surface of each cabinets for imperfections. Pack any low spots with a stainable wood filler. Finally, you can use the sandpaper to manually perfect the finish of the cabinet. Clean up the room, and you're finished!
