How to Fix Leaking Bathroom Sink Faucets

By Karin Mangan

Learn how to identify and rebuild leaking bathroom sink faucets in a short time with these basic step-by-step instructions. If your bathroom sink faucets have a weak flow of water coming out, the aerator which is screwed onto the end of the faucet might need replacing. Here are the steps:

Step One: Take apart the faucet.

  • The first thing to do is to turn off the water supply to both the hot and cold lines under the sink.
  • Next remove the caps from the handles and then remove the handle screw and handles.
  • Loosen the compression nuts and then remove them. Grab the old cartridges and rotate them until they slip out of the body.
  • Finally, remove the washers and springs that are located under each cartridge.

Step Two: Check O-rings, stems, seals and springs.

You can purchase kits for different types of faucets. This can help you replace everything at once. You can also opt to buy individual replacement parts. You must install the stems carefully to ensure that they are positioned correctly for the handles.

Step Three: Put aerator and faucet back together.

  • After springs and washers are replaced, place the cartridge on the cold side of the faucet. It is best if you have a look at the specific faucet manufacturer's instructions to do this. Next, screw on the compression nut and tighten it.
  • Repeat for the above step for hot side of the faucet.
  • Ensure that the cartridge is installed in the proper position and the compression nut is tight.
  • Replace the handles like they were before, and then replace the caps. Install the new aerator by simply screwing it to the faucets spout.

The final step is replacing your bathroom sink faucets is to turn the water back on, check the flow, and check again under the sink to make sure the leak was fixed.
