Top Technology Tips to Transform Your Bathroom

By Karin Mangan

You can install many different kinds of technology in your bathroom to serve a range of purposes from comfort to energy efficiency.

  • Entertainment. You can integrate entertainment into your bathroom--listen to your favorite music on your MP3 player while you're in the shower or watch a movie while soaking in the tub. Choose from a range of waterproof screens and you can even have a screen built into the mirror, which reverts to an ordinary mirror when the screen is not in use. A mirror screen can be ideal if you want the benefits of modern technology but don't want it to dominate the look of your bathroom.
  • Go digital. You can have digital control panels fitted to allow you to operate or program your lights, entertainment, and other technology with the touch of a button.
  • Get moving. Motion-sensitive faucets that automatically turn off when not in use can save water and money, and have the benefit of being more hygienic because you don't need to touch anything.
  • Heat it up. Underfloor heating isn't new technology but the technology has improved. It has the advantage of being an efficient way to heat your bathroom. Underfloor heating can make your bathroom more comfortable on cold days, especially for tiled or marble floors, and can save wall space that would otherwise have been used for a radiator or heater.
  • Lighten up. Install bathroom-suitable LED lights in your bathroom to suit any style you want--modern technology can be fitted to complement even the most traditional décor. LED lights last considerably longer than incandescent bulbs or fluorescent tubes, and are significantly more energy-efficient.
  • Switch it up. For an ultra-modern, sleek look, you can do away with light switches and replace them with "tap tiles" that allow you to simply touch an area of your tiling to turn the lights on and off, or to dim the light to the level you want. Touch technology is safe to use in wet areas, even inside the shower.
  • Insulate. If you like to take a long soak in the tub, you can install a product that insulates the bath and prevents the water from cooling down too quickly. The insulation can save you money because you don't need to keep topping up the hot water.
  • Get Healthy. You can even install a toilet that checks your physical health! A number of devices within and next to the toilet provide a medical check that includes your weight, body fat, blood pressure, and urine sugar level.

Always check that any technology you install in your bathroom is suitable for a wet environment, and always use a certified electrician to fit electrical devices and wiring in your bathroom.
