Is Your Refrigerator Running? Tips for Fridge Care and Repair

Is your refrigerator running? You'd better catch it! With proper care and maintenance, your refrigerator may never require major repairs.

Here's how to keep your refrigerator running smoothly

Clean out your refrigerator regularly: The day before your weekly trash pick-up is a great time to do this, and it's easy to remember. When cleaning the interior, avoid using corrosive or toxic cleaners, as these can damage refrigerator parts and damage food. Using a solution of 2 tablespoons of baking soda to a quart of water will help remove odors while safely cleaning interior surfaces. Rinse carefully. Before replacing the contents, leave the door open and let the interior compartment of your refrigerator air out and dry.

Set temperatures correctly: For the food compartment, the temperature should be between 37-40 degrees Fahrenheit. The freezer compartment should be about 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

Maintain the freezer compartment according to manufacturers' instructions: Frost-free freezers kept outdoors or in a garage may need to be turned off when temperatures fall. Freezer compartments work best when kept full.

Check door seals and gaskets: Close the refrigerator or freezer door over a piece of paper. If you can easily pull the paper out, the door seals may need replacing. Gaskets can become worn and can be lubricated with petroleum jelly.

Clean the condenser compartment: Unless you have a model that doesn't require condenser cleaning, it's important to clean the condenser coils that are accessible from the back of your refrigerator. You'll need to pull out the fridge and vacuum out the condenser compartment.

Follow these tips to keep your refrigerator humming along, but if your refrigerator needs major repairs, it's a good idea to consult a licensed repair service authorized to repair your brand of refrigerator.
